Once again the world is saved from those darn Ivy League Mathematicians with their crazy math equations of terror!
The heroic passenger in question was on a flight from philedelphia to Ontario when they noticed a suspiciously dark featured man writing down what had to be nothing other than some terrorist ramblings, so they notified the cabin crew right away saving the world from another terror plot!
…except the passenger was less heroic and more so an idiot. The ramblings in question were mathematical equations, and the “suspicious character” an Italian-born associate professor in Economics at the University of Pennsylvania by the name of Guido Menzio, who was at the time working on a last minute differential equation that he was preparing for a lecture on “Search Theory” in Canada.
The flight was turned around on the runway due to the passenger feeling ill, and the suspicious mathematics enthusiast taken in to custody and questioned for two hours.
As Menzio reported to the Associated Press: “I thought they were trying to get clues about her illness. Instead, they tell me that the woman was concerned that I was a terrorist because I was writing strange things on a pad of paper.”
Menzio did mention he was treated with respect and after two hours was able to explain himself and allowed to re board the plane, the other passenger though, was not.
So hopefully this serves as a lesson to mathematitans everywhere: Becareful who you do your smart person thing in front of, or they might mistake it as the ramblings of a madman, terrorist or some Satan worshipping witchcraft!
